ÖBB Ends Nightjet Connections Between Berlin/Paris and Vienna/Paris
Passengers will lose a popular overnight travel option as ÖBB announces the end of Nightjet connections between Berlin and Paris, and Vienna and Paris. The last trains will depart on December 14, 2025, following the withdrawal of French government subsidies.
The decision comes after the French government ceased funding these routes, making their operation unviable for ÖBB. The Berlin to Paris route, launched in December 2023, and the Vienna to Paris connection, starting in 2021, will both be discontinued.
In 2024, approximately 36,000 passengers used the Vienna to Paris route. Despite an average occupancy rate of 70 percent for both lines, the lack of state subsidies has led to their closure. Paris had invested around ten million euros annually to promote these routes.
Passengers can still rely on the daytime ICE connection between Berlin and Paris, taking around eight hours. Other Nightjet routes, such as the Vienna to Brussels connection, remain unaffected. ÖBB's decision highlights the importance of state subsidies for night train services, which are often more environmentally friendly and less crowded than daytime alternatives.
