Ofwat Imposes £86.8m Fines on Anglian and South West Water for Wastewater Failures
Ofwat, the UK's water industry regulator, has imposed significant fines on Anglian Water and South West Water for failing to maintain and upgrade their wastewater assets. The Senior Director for Regulation at Ofwat, Olivia Bensoul, announced the penalties.
Anglian Water will pay an enforcement package of £62.8m, while South West Water will pay £24m. Ofwat's investigations revealed that both companies lacked adequate processes and senior management oversight for ensuring asset performance and legal compliance. This led to excessive spills from storm overflows.
Lynn Parker, Senior Director for Enforcement at Ofwat, stated that the public expects companies to rectify their failures and deliver transformative change. The enforcement action against these two companies is part of Ofwat's sector-wide investigation, with total enforcement worth over £240m by 2025. In total, £86.8m will be paid by both companies for breaching legal obligations in wastewater treatment.
