Oil tanker, dubbed 'Shadow fleet', navigates towards Danish waters following maritime distress.

A whopper of an oil tanker, carrying close to 100,000 tons of black gold, is being tugged towards Skagen, Denmark's chilly north coast, authorities announced on Monday.

The hulking oil tanker, aptly named Eventin, found itself in a spots of bother near the German island of Rügen last week, and it's still limping along, unable to steer on its own accord. According to German news agency dpa, the German authority for waterways and shipping in the Baltic Sea, Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Ostsee, has the plan to tow this oil-laden giant in the direction of Skagen.

The exact destination of this ship is a bit hazy, but it's expected to travel towards Skagen, Danish news wire Ritzau writes.

The Eventin, sailing under the flag of Panama, is said to be part of the so-called "shadow fleet," void of any allegiance, operating on the sly to bypass restrictions placed on Russian oil [6]. Russian authorities, feeling the burn from Western sanctions imposed on Russia's oil industry since 2022 [7], have been employing tankers with obscure ownership and inadequate insurance to keep their lucrative oil trade humming along.
