OpenAI Bolsters Chip Supply Chain for AI Ambitions
OpenAI, the leading AI research organization, is bolstering its chip supply chain. It has secured major partnerships with TSMC and Foxconn to meet its ambitious goals in initiatives like Stargate, involving hundreds of billions in data centers and AI factories.
OpenAI is working on developing its own AI ASIC chips, aiming to reduce dependence on Nvidia GPUs. The organization has formed an ASIC design team and is collaborating with Broadcom to create a custom AI chip using TSMC's 3nm process. Mass production is expected in Q3 2026.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently visited Taiwan to meet with representatives of TSMC and Foxconn. These meetings could strengthen their cooperation in scaling up OpenAI's global AI infrastructure and gaining insights into TSMC's advanced process nodes.
OpenAI's chip supply chain also includes partnerships with Samsung and SK Hynix for memory chips and equipment. Nvidia will deliver AI processors from late 2026 and invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI. Other partners like Oracle and Broadcom are involved in chip supply and infrastructure development. Additionally, Foxconn, an integral partner of Softbank, is supporting OpenAI's data center projects, including a facility in Ohio sold to Softbank earlier this year.
OpenAI's strategic partnerships with TSMC, Foxconn, Samsung, SK Hynix, and Nvidia will enable it to meet its commitments in major AI initiatives. These collaborations will help OpenAI advance the development of specialized AI chips, secure chip supply, and build AI data centers, further solidifying its position in the AI landscape.
