OpenAI Unveils Codex, Cheaper Models, and Tools for Developers

OpenAI has made significant strides in AI development, announcing the general availability of Codex with new features, unveiling cheaper and more accessible models, and introducing tools to enhance developer experience. The company also revealed impressive user statistics for ChatGPT.

Codex, OpenAI's AI-powered coding assistant, is now generally available. It comes with new features such as a Slack integration and an SDK for easy integration into existing workflows. In addition, OpenAI has introduced two more affordable models: gpt-realtime-mini, which is about 70% cheaper than its predecessor, and gpt-image-1-mini, a cost-effective variant of OpenAI's image processing model.

At launch, apps from several prominent companies are available, including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. More partners like DoorDash, OpenTable, Target, and Uber are set to join later this year, initially for non-EU users with EU introduction planned.

OpenAI has also published AgentKit, a comprehensive toolkit for developing, deploying, and optimizing AI agents. It includes a visual 'Agent Builder' for complex workflows. Furthermore, the new 'Apps SDK' transforms ChatGPT into an interactive platform for third-party apps, supporting full-screen view and dynamic interaction with the model.

ChatGPT's popularity continues to soar, now boasting over 800 million weekly users and more than four million developers working on the platform. API traffic has reached an impressive six billion tokens per minute. OpenAI has also launched GPT-5 Pro, its most powerful language model to date, exclusively through the Responses API.

OpenAI's latest developments, including the general availability of Codex, cheaper and more accessible models, and new tools for developers, demonstrate the company's commitment to advancing AI technology. With ChatGPT's surging popularity and the introduction of GPT-5 Pro, OpenAI continues to shape the future of AI.
