Highways' 25,000 repeat offenders owe fines for speeding violations - Over 24,000 motorists caught exceeding speed limits on highways are now financially responsible for recognized penalties

In the opening months of 2025, Saxony's highways saw a significant number of speeding fines, with approximately 25,000 penalty notices issued, according to the State Directorate of Saxony. This figure is similar to the number of penalty notices issued during the same period the previous year.

Speeding constitutes more than three-quarters of all traffic violations on Saxony’s freeways. The penalties for speeding depend on the degree of speed excess. For example, typical fines range from €20 for up to 10 km/h over the limit outside city areas, increasing progressively with the severity of the violation. More serious violations above 25 km/h over the limit can result in fines starting at €100, points on the driver’s license, and driving bans from one month up to three months for extreme cases.

The highest speed excess was reportedly recorded on the A9 highway, with a vehicle traveling towards Munich clocked at 207 kilometers per hour, which is 127 kilometers per hour over the speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour. In exceptional cases, penalties can be severe, such as a driver caught at 199 mph (~320 km/h) on the A2 Autobahn near Burg (Saxony-Anhalt), who was fined €900, received two points on their license, and faced a three-month driving ban.

Revenues from fines and warning fines for traffic offenses on highways in the first six months of 2025 totaled around 3.95 million euros. This figure represents a significant increase compared to the same period in 2024. Other common traffic offenses on highways include ignoring the overtaking ban or the minimum distance rule.

It is important to note that the city of Chemnitz, located in Saxony, was not specified as a location where a high number of penalty notices were issued. However, the failure to comply with speed limits accounted for over three-quarters of all traffic offenses on highways for which a fine was imposed.

In conclusion, the highways of Saxony, including the autobahns, are under strict enforcement, with speeding being a prevalent issue. Drivers are advised to adhere to the speed limits to avoid penalties and ensure road safety.
