Peak Tourist Season: Highest Number of Overnight Stays Ever Recorded

Vacation Vibes Unabated: Despite the economic turbulence and the Euro Cup, Germans are determined to savor their finest time of the year, refusing to let it slip by. And, strangely enough, destinations nestled between the Alps and the coasts have never been more popular. Although international tourists held back slightly due to the tournament, they're expected to make a comeback soon.

Surprisingly, even amidst the financial struggles, the tourism sector knocked record-breaking numbers in the last year. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the industry racked up a whopping 496.1 million overnight stays, exceeding the previous year by 1.9% and even slightly surpassing the charm of 2019 by a mere 0.1%. The Corona pandemic may have caused significant setbacks, but the industry managed to bounce back with resilience.

The German Tourism Association (DTV) celebrated this 'new milestone', stating that Germany had attracted tourists like a magnet once more. The current year shows no signs of slowing down, promising peak values. However, the wheels of progress are not without their challenges. Last-minute bookings are emerging as a growing trend, presenting a constant concern for the industry.

Domestic travelers increased their overnight stays by 1.1%, surpassing the pre-Corona level of 2019 by a fraction more. On the other hand, foreign travelers reported a 5.4% increase, albeit falling short of their pre-pandemic numbers by 5.1%. Approximately half a million football fans visited Germany for the Euro Cup, but their presence could not compensate for the substantial drop.

Hotel businesses have been on the mend, although they have yet to return to their pre-crisis levels in 2019. Meanwhile, holiday accommodations and campsites have seen fluctuations. Holiday accommodations barely scraped past their 2019 levels, while campsites have experienced a significant boost in stays.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the economic environment may be responsible for the shift in preferences towards more affordable destinations. Other tourism-related establishments, like health and rehabilitation clinics, and training centers, have reported lower overnight stays compared to 2019.

Just a casual glance over the statistics of German tourism in 2024 reveals several salient trends. Firstly, record-breaking overnight stays across various types of accommodations. Secondly, a slight increase in the number of foreign guests, but not quite reaching the pre-pandemic figure. Lastly, the rise of early bookings, a continuation of the trend that started years ago. Additionally, the German travel industry is projecting a revenue growth of 6% in 2025, driven by the soaring demand for popular destinations like the Canary Islands, Turkey, and Egypt. Germany's fascination with sun-filled, culturally rich getaways shows no signs of waning, either during the summer or the colder months. Over the winter season, travel spending is expected to increase by 6%, even as the number of travelers slightly declines.

In essence, German tourism is witnessing a robust recovery and anticipating continuous growth. The sector's resilience in the face of economic challenges and external events like the Euro Cup is a testament to its strength and appeal. It's a safe bet that vacation plans are high on Germans' lists and will remain so as we move into 2025.

The tourism sector's resilience is evident in the record-breaking overnight stays in 2021, despite the challenges posed by the Corona pandemic and the Euro Cup. Furthermore, the tourism industry is projected to experience a 6% revenue growth in 2025, with an increasing preference for sun-filled destinations like the Canary Islands, Turkey, and Egypt.
