Comprehensive Tunnel Renewal on B14: Two Weekends of Closure Ahead

The Kappelberg Tunnel on the B14 between Fellbach and Stuttgart will be completely closed for two consecutive weekends in August 2025, as safety-related measures necessitate a comprehensive replacement of the outdated tunnel operating technology.

The first closure will take place from Thursday, August 7 at 9 PM until Monday, August 11 at 5 AM. During this period, drivers may expect delays due to the closure. This closure coincides with VfB Stuttgart's home test match against FC Bologna on August 8, adding to the already difficult traffic situation.

The second closure will take place from the weekend of August 15 to 18. The closure will occur from Friday evening at 9 PM to Monday morning at 5 AM. Notably, this period includes VfB Stuttgart's Supercup match against FC Bayern Munich on August 16, further complicating the traffic situation.

The Rems-Murr district, as the tunnel operator, has planned these works during the summer school holidays to minimize traffic disruption. Alternative routes will be clearly marked with detour signs to guide traffic around the tunnel. Drivers are advised to avoid the area by using these known bypass routes or planning a wider detour to reduce congestion. Specific alternative route details will be indicated through official signage on-site during the closure.

The Kappelberg Tunnel is the most important connection between the Remstal and the state capital of Stuttgart, with approximately 80,000 vehicles daily. A safe tunnel operation cannot be guaranteed without comprehensive renewal of the outdated technology, which has been in use for 20 years.

In addition to the technological upgrades, a large-scale exercise will be conducted during the tunnel closure on August 17. This exercise will simulate a fire in the Kappelberg Tunnel, providing an opportunity to practice for potential future accidents or emergencies. Firefighters, rescue services, and police will participate in this exercise, practicing for a real-life scenario.

The closures are essential to ensure the safety of the tunnel and its users. Partial closure is not feasible due to the complexity and extent of the technical reinstallation. Drivers are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly and to be patient during these necessary works.

  1. To ensure safety and efficiency for public-transit users and the automotive industry, drivers are advised to avoid the Kappelberg Tunnel on the B14 in August 2025, as the outdated technology necessitates a comprehensive renewal that requires two consecutive weekends of closure.
  2. The financial implications of the tunnel renewal project extend beyond the transportation sector, as the Rems-Murr district, as the tunnel operator, aims to minimize disruption during the summer school holidays by providing clear alternative routes for drivers to navigate around the closure.
  3. In an effort to maintain a high level of preparedness in the event of emergencies, the closure of the Kappelberg Tunnel on August 17 will serve as a platform for a large-scale fire simulation exercise, involving firefighters, rescue services, and the police, underscoring the importance of the technological upgrade in the finance, transportation, and public-transit industries.
