Persistent Capacity Struggles Highlighted in Q1 2023 Finished Vehicle Logistics Review

In the ever-evolving landscape of the automotive and logistics industries, Bastian Solutions finds itself navigating a complex web of challenges. The latest survey, conducted by Automotive Logistics in partnership with RPM, has identified a range of issues that are causing concern for finished vehicle logistics providers.

The survey highlights severe capacity constraints, labour shortages, market uncertainty, rising fuel and energy costs, volume volatility, rising freight rates, unpredictable lead times, and production disruption as key challenges. These issues are compounded by the ongoing war in Ukraine and severe inflationary effects upon businesses and consumers, creating broader economic headwinds and uncertainties.

The shortage of parts, particularly semiconductors, continues to be a significant problem. This lingering after-effect of the Covid pandemic has impacted production at leading car manufacturers, forcing many to revise down their annual production forecasts.

Labour costs, staff retention, and recruitment remain major issues for both industries. These challenges have a significant impact on the production and transit of goods, particularly in the transport of finished vehicles by road and rail.

The survey also captures the industry sentiment around production and sales, the wider economic outlook, company outlook, the impact of EV growth, investment in new technologies, and the longer-term transitions to sustainability. With the potential for a period of stagnation or even recession across most advanced economies, it becomes particularly challenging for finished vehicle logistics providers to survive, thrive, and invest in the future.

Despite these challenges, Bastian Solutions continues to strive for innovation and excellence in the face of adversity, working tirelessly to provide efficient and reliable solutions to the complex issues facing the automotive and logistics industries today.
