Persistent Economic Challenges: IHK Predicts Prolonged Economic Instability

Offenbach's Economic Struggles Persist

The economic climate in Offenbach continues to stir concerns, with businesses across the region feeling the strain. The latest Industry and Commerce Chamber (IHK) survey reveals no sight of an economic rebound, as the business climate index stays at 89 points, a value that signals a persistent crisis.

One-third of companies evaluate their current business situation as poor, and only 13% anticipate an upturn in the near future. Caution also prevails when it comes to investment readiness. "The results of the second IHK business climate survey in 2025 are truly disheartening,” comments IHK CEO Markus Weinbrenner.

Industrial Sector Struggles

Industry and wholesale firms face significant headwinds. Companies report weak domestic and foreign demand, export stagnation, and apprehensions about escalating tariffs. Although 9% of businesses have noted a slight increase in employment demand, more than one-fifth report a dip, continuing the grim trend from the previous months.

Retail Shows Slim Hopes

In the retail sector, a glimmer of optimism emerges, as stable consumer buying power may be driving cautious optimism – although the recovery remains minimal. Nonetheless, the positive decline remains minor compared to the industries mentioned above.

Shifting Risks and Persistent Problems

While concerns over high energy and raw material prices have seen a decrease compared to the previous year, other issues such as skilled labor shortages, bureaucracy, and an absence of investment incentives remain substantial challenges for businesses. Now, companies are eagerly waiting for decisive signals from the government.

The Call for Government Action

IHK CEO Weinbrenner urges the federal government to take immediate and decisive action. He argues, "The current entrepreneur assessments underline the urgent need for a new economic policy that is consistently executed and stimulates economic growth. We require deep-rooted structural reforms in social security systems and a complete modernization of the administration. Businesses and citizens in Germany are now expecting concrete action from our politics."
