Pharmaceutical company Merck inaugurates a €150 million eco-friendly manufacturing facility in Cork, focusing on carbon neutral production.
Merck, a leading global biopharmaceutical company, has announced the expansion of its manufacturing operations in Cork, Ireland. The expansion includes the opening of a new €150m filtration manufacturing facility at Blarney Business Park, as well as a commitment of €440m across its Cork operations in Blarney and Carrigtwohill.
According to Mark Dunphy, Managing Director and Head of Cork Operations at Merck Life Science, Ireland, the new Blarney facility reinforces the company's long-term commitment to Ireland. The facility, designed for full climate-neutral operations, is expected to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2025.
The new facility will produce filtration devices essential for ensuring that medicines are safe, sterile, and effective for patients. These devices will be used in aseptic processing, tangential-flow filtration, and virus filtration, technologies that are crucial for the biopharmaceutical industry.
Jean-Charles Wirth, CEO of Merck Life Science, stated that Ireland is a leading hub for biopharmaceutical manufacturing and innovation for Europe and globally. He added that the expansion is intended to shorten lead times, reduce cross-border risks, and provide customers with reliable access to critical filtration technologies.
The expansion will support more than 200 new jobs in Cork by 2028, as stated by both Mark Dunphy and Jean-Charles Wirth. This commitment, according to Minister of State Jerry Buttimer, further strengthens Ireland's reputation as a global hub for biopharmaceutical manufacturing and innovation.
The new Blarney facility is Merck's first to be powered entirely by renewable electricity. It is part of Merck's strategy to be a reliable supplier of life-changing therapies, as stated by Jean-Charles Wirth. The technologies produced at the facility support the manufacture of breakthrough therapies for patients around the world.
The expansion of manufacturing in Cork, as stated by Jean-Charles Wirth, reinforces Merck's in-region-for-region manufacturing and supply model. The new Blarney facility, according to Mark Dunphy, highlights the incredible talent and expertise that Merck has in Cork. This investment, as stated by Mark Dunphy, strengthens Merck's ability to deliver cutting-edge technologies.
