Progress of sugar beet harvest in Uspensky district evaluated by Kuban governor Veniamin Kondratyev
The largest sugar producer in Russia, Krasnodar Krai, is currently facing challenges in its sugar production due to adverse weather conditions. As of mid-August 2025, only about a fifth of Russia's 66 sugar factories are operational, with 12 of them located in Krasnodar Krai.
These factories, including Agrofirm "Agrosugar" in Krasnodar Krai, are producing approximately 10.3 kilotonnes of sugar daily and a total of 74.2 kilotonnes of white beet sugar since the season started in 2025/26. However, the reduction in purchases by sugar plants in Krasnodar may negatively impact overall production.
The region is experiencing severe drought conditions, which have contributed to significant crop quality and yield reductions, especially for grain but also impacting sugar beet crops indirectly by stressing agricultural conditions. As a result, the overall agricultural output in the region is expected to decline, with experts warning of crop losses up to 20% in some areas and deteriorating quality.
In response to these challenges, there is a growing recognition of the need for enhanced inter-regional cooperation to stabilize agricultural production and manage supply chains effectively. While concrete initiatives are not detailed explicitly in recent reports, the larger context of Russia’s agriculture ministry striving to balance regional production shortfalls amid adverse weather underlines the importance of collaborative measures across regions like Krasnodar, Rostov, and Stavropol to sustain sugar and grain outputs.
Agrofirm "Agrosugar", one of the dynamically developing agricultural enterprises in the region, is located in Krasnodar Krai and has a sowing area of almost 16,500 hectares. The firm grows not only sugar beet but also wheat, barley, and soy. The year has been challenging due to drought affecting wheat, beet, and other crops in several municipalities.
Despite the challenges, Agrofirm "Agrosugar" is part of the company "Uspenskii Sugar" and has its own seed factory equipped with modern equipment. The firm is a participant in the federal project "Labor Productivity", which became part of the national project "Efficient and Competitive Economy" in 2025. Maximizing the capacity of sugar factories can help maintain the status as a guarantor of food security, according to Veniamin Kondratyev.
The livelihoods of local farmers and workers, the economy of municipalities, and the entire region depend on the supply of raw materials to the sugar factories. Keeping enterprises running is important to ensure the continued operation of the sugar factories. In some areas, such as the Uspensky District, beet yields have reached 450 centners per hectare.
The Kuban Vice-Governor, Andrey Korobka, has visited the fields of Agrofirm "Agrosugar" to assess the situation firsthand. The factories in the region often accept beet from other regions for processing, highlighting the importance of inter-regional cooperation in managing the current agricultural challenges.
