Projects in Lausitz are progressing at an extraordinary pace, according to Woidke.

Brandenburg's Minister President, Dietmar Woidke, has highlighted the record pace at which the structural change in Lusatia is taking place, following the coal phase-out decision five years ago.

In a recent statement, Woidke compared the speed of construction of a new ICE maintenance workshop in Cottbus to that of a Tesla factory, stating that the workshop was built in less time. This workshop, now commissioned, is expected to create 1,200 new industrial jobs and already has 580 job openings listed.

The phase-out of coal-fired power generation in Lusatia is scheduled to be completed by 2038, a goal the federal government is supporting with billions of euros. The new Medical University in Cottbus, founded in 2024, will welcome its first students next year, marking a significant step forward in the region's development.

The Medical University Lusatia – Carl Thiem is a substantial structural change project and will create the youngest medical university in Germany and the first state university of medicine in Brandenburg. The financier of this university is not explicitly mentioned, and detailed financial data is not provided in the sources. However, it is part of the state's and federal government's support for the structural development of Lusatia, with an investment of 3.7 billion euros earmarked for this project.

The state Chancellery has also confirmed close coordination between the state and federal government in financing further projects in Lusatia. By 2038, financial aid of 3.6 billion euros will be available to the state from the first funding pillar. The federal government will finance further projects in Lusatia in close coordination with the state, with more than 6.7 billion euros earmarked for this purpose by 2038.

This comprehensive support forms part of a law passed to provide aid of around 40 billion euros for four coal regions. The structural development of Lusatia will be supported by the state government through two funding pillars. The construction of the first car at the electric car factory in Grünheide took 861 days, a testament to the region's ability to adapt and progress.

As Lusatia moves forward, the new ICE maintenance workshop in Cottbus and the Medical University Lusatia – Carl Thiem are poised to make record progress, contributing significantly to the region's economic and educational landscape.
