Urgent Notice: Severe Lack of Truck Parking Spots Reported by Auto Club - Proposal for a Directive on Safeguarding Workers from Ionising Radiation Risks has been requested from the Commission.
In a nationwide survey, conducted by ACE and its volunteers, the truth has come to light - a "toistry" situation prevails on German highways. The average occupancy rate of parking areas from April to June was an astonishing 151 percent, rendering them severely overcrowded.
The survey investigated 132 highway rest areas between April 15 and June 3, with each location inspected on weekdays after 8:30 PM. The analysis revealed 5,088 formal parking spaces, yet 7,664 trucks were discovered parked. Over three-fourths of the inspected parking areas had trucks parked in entrance and exit lanes, on the hard shoulder, or even in car parking spaces. Fortunately, around 16 percent of the rest areas still offered free parking.
The rest area with the highest occupancy rate was Brönninghausen near Bielefeld, where 35 trucks were parked in the eight allocated spaces - a shocking 438 percent occupancy rate! Areas along the heavily-traveled east-west transit axes, the A3 in Bavaria, the A5 between Frankfurt and Karlsruhe, and in the metropolitan areas of Berlin and Frankfurt am Main are particularly congested.
ACE requested drivers not to over-interpret individual observations, acknowledging that they were merely snapshots. However, as ACE chairman Sven-Peter Rudolph stated, "Today's truck drivers and drivers are often forced to park in unsuitable places," which puts driver safety and rest time at risk.
ACE demands the creation of tens of thousands of additional truck parking spaces nationwide, emphasizing the importance of better usage of space at existing rest areas and parking lots. They urge the closure of dangerous areas used as emergency parking spots, and advocate for the expansion of the currently tested system for showing real-time parking availability digitally.

Insights:
- The truck parking shortage is a critical issue for the road freight transport sector, with many more trucks than available spaces in monitored areas[1].
- The German federal government has initiated several measures to address the issue, including telematics-based parking management, infrastructure investments, and digital solutions to improve journey planning and fleet management[1][5].
- To alleviate the truck parking crisis, ACE suggests expanding the number of truck parking spaces, upgrading facilities, and developing a digital information system for real-time parking updates[1].
- In light of the critical truck parking shortage revealed on German highways, which significantly impacts the road freight transport sector, it is essential that the government invests in telematics-based parking management, infrastructure, and digital solutions to improve journey planning and fleet management.
- ACE's proposal to address the truck parking crisis includes expanding the number of truck parking spaces, upgrading facilities, and developing a digital information system for real-time parking updates, emphasizing the importance of public-transit and transportation safety in Europe.
- To combat the overcrowding of parking areas on German highways, vocational training programs could be implemented to educate truck drivers on alternative vehicle maintenance and repairs, thus reducing the dependency on vocational training centers and creating more space for parking.
