PSA Expands Antwerp Terminal to Ease Maritime Vehicle Logistics Capacity Crunch
The maritime finished vehicle logistics sector is grappling with capacity pressures due to pandemic-related vessel reductions and a global manufacturing rebound. To tackle these challenges, PSA International is expanding the Sallaum Terminal in Antwerp, set to accommodate new carriers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Tesla and CarMax while benefiting from its strategic location.
The expansion includes a multistorey car park covering 47,000 sq.m, adding 15,000 car equivalent unit (CEU) spaces in the first phase and another 17,000 in the second phase. This will significantly boost the terminal's capacity, which currently stands at 10,000 CEU on its 240,000 sq.m area. The terminal's 1,200-metre berth can already accommodate four vessels at a time.
To support this growth, Sallaum Lines has ordered six new ro-ro vessels, each with a 7,400 CEU capacity, scheduled for delivery from March 2026. The company is also investing in onshore power connections to reduce emissions. The terminal boasts good multimodal transport links on road and rail, and offers services like pre-delivery inspection (PDI), breakbulk and project cargo handling, and heavy lift management.
Conflict in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden has disrupted shipping routes, reducing global rotations by 20% and causing a deficit of 30 pure car and truck carriers a year. This expansion aims to mitigate these disruptions and strengthen the sector's resilience, providing news of relief for the industry.
PSA International's expansion of the Sallaum Terminal in Antwerp is set to alleviate capacity pressures in the maritime finished vehicle logistics sector. With increased capacity, improved sustainability efforts, and a strategic location, the terminal is poised to attract new carriers and OEMs like Tesla and CarMax, bolstering the sector's ability to navigate global challenges.
