Rail disaster at Huntebrücke: Disruption of the railway line linking Bremen and Nordenham due to another maritime mishap
The Hunte railway bridge, a crucial infrastructure for rail traffic in the region, has suffered a second incident in less than a year. On July 23rd, an inland vessel collided with the bridge, causing significant damage that led to the vessel sinking in the Hunte river and the partial tearing off of the replacement bridge that was completed in late April/early May.
The first incident, which occurred in February, was so severe that it necessitated the complete dismantling of the original bridge. Since then, land transport has been the only option for munitions transshipment in Nordenham, a central hub for such shipments for Ukraine.
The collision has disrupted the only train connection for freight traffic between the ports of Brake and Nordenham. Passengers can only reach Hude, where a temporary rail replacement service is available. The incident has also affected the transshipment of goods, as the port of Nordenham is a significant hub for such activities.
Images show the damaged replacement bridge, with parts of it torn off and the inland vessel severely damaged, with its entire upper deck being torn off and the vessel sinking. The causes of these incidents are still under investigation, and the exact extent of the ongoing disruptions is not yet known.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it is recommended to check recent local news sources, transport authority announcements, or official updates from the railway operator handling the Bremen-Nordenham line.
