Raising Speed Limit on New Zealand's SH1 Motorway: Over 110 km/h allowed in the north of Orewa section.
State Highway 1 (SH1) along the Northern Gateway Toll Road now has a higher speed limit of 110km/h, following a consultation by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) late last year.
The increase, which came into effect from north of Orewa to south of the Johnstone's Hill Tunnels, was met with widespread support. More than 7900 submissions were received from across Northland and Auckland, with 93% supporting the change. An impressive 91% of the submissions strongly endorsed the increased speed limit.
The transport minister, whose name is not available in the provided search results, announced the change, stating that the new higher speed limit is intended to help people and freight get to where they need to go quickly and safely. The Government believes that the increase will bring tangible benefits.
The road has been designed and constructed with safety features, including two lanes in each direction, physical median separation, and a mostly straight, wide alignment. Despite the increased speed limit, the speed still drops to 80km/h through the Johnstones Hill Tunnels.
Around 11,000 vehicles per day travel on the Northern Gateway, with nearly 9% being heavy vehicles. Police will enforce the new speed limit as stringently as the previous one to ensure safety remains a priority.
Additional safety improvements are being considered over the next 12 to 18 months to further enhance the safety of the road. There are no current plans to review or change the speed limit for this section of State Highway 1.
