Rektron Plans to Acquire Majority Stake in Ghana's Telecom Operator AT Ghana

Canadian infrastructure giant Rektron Group Inc. is in the proposal stage to acquire a 60% controlling stake in AT Ghana, the state-owned telecom operator formerly known as AirtelTigo [1][2][4]. This strategic move aims to establish Rektron's presence in Ghana's telecommunications sector.

The deal, if successful, would mark Rektron's strategic entry into Ghana's telecom market, beyond its existing infrastructure investments. The acquisition is a rare large-scale foreign acquisition in Ghana's telecom sector since AT was nationalised in 2021 [1][2][5].

In partnership with local telecom firm Afritel Ghana, founded by industry veteran Nana Richmond Aggrey, Rektron is pursuing the acquisition [3]. However, the precise terms of the partnership, such as the ownership split or operational roles, have not been explicitly disclosed in the publicly available information as of late July 2025 [3].

AT Ghana currently serves 2.3 million customers and offers voice, data, mobile money, and enterprise services [6]. The acquisition would expand Rektron's digital footprint in Africa's fast-growing telecoms landscape.

According to Atanas Kolarov, CEO of Rektron, the acquisition aligns with their global vision to advance infrastructure, foster innovation, and deliver value across emerging markets [7]. Nana Richmond Aggrey, Founder of Afritel Ghana, mentioned that the partnership brings strategic investment and next-gen infrastructure to improve access and reduce data costs [8].

However, Rektron has cautioned that there's no assurance the deal will be finalized [9]. The acquisition of AT Ghana is subject to regulatory approval [10].

Rektron is listed in Canada and Frankfurt and is known for energy and infrastructure investments in emerging markets [11]. The Ghanaian government has signed an MoU with Rektron and Afritel on May 21, 2025 [12].
