Renault, the French automobile manufacturer, has appointed Stephane Deblaise as the new CEO for its operations in India, effective September 1, 2023. The appointment is part of Renault's strategy to expand its vehicle market in India, reflecting the company's renewed strategic focus on India as a key growth market.

With full ownership of the Chennai plant, Renault now has the means to accelerate in the Indian market. The Chennai plant, owned by Renault, has produced over 2.8 million vehicles since its launch in 2010, and over 1.2 million vehicles produced at the plant have been exported to more than 100 countries. The plant is currently dedicated to the production of models underpinned by Renault's CMF-A and CMF-A+ platforms.

Stephane Deblaise, who joined Renault in 2000 as an advanced process engineer, has worked in various engineering roles at Renault's strategic manufacturing hubs in Latin America, China, and other locations. Prior to his role in India, he was CEO of Renault's operations in South Korea, where he modernized multi-energy vehicle production and positioned the plant as a global hub.

Under Deblaise's leadership, Renault aims to accelerate its development in India, building on his global experience in transforming operations. While explicit details on new model launches or partnerships in India have not been extensively disclosed in the current announcements, Renault's prior and ongoing activities suggest focus areas include:

  • Key models: Continued emphasis on popular models such as the Renault Triber and New Duster, with potential electrification initiatives as part of their multi-energy vehicle strategy, aligning with global trends.
  • Expansion plans: Strengthening manufacturing and development capabilities in India to support Renault’s broader international ambitions, likely scaling up local production and possibly introducing new mid- to large-sized vehicles adapted to the regional market.
  • Partnerships: Deblaise will report to Francois Provost, Chief of Procurement, Partnerships, and Public Affairs, indicating that forming or expanding strategic alliances and partnerships will be a focus area in India's evolving auto ecosystem.

Venkatram Mamillapalle, Renault India’s Managing Director, will continue to support Deblaise on corporate affairs to build a mid-term growth roadmap, suggesting coordinated efforts in planning expansion and partnership initiatives.

The Chennai plant is preparing to host Renault's new flexible, multi-energy modular platform, which will support the production of Renault's future models. Renault is also establishing a design center in Chennai, which will be its largest design center outside of France.

In summary, Stephane Deblaise’s appointment signals Renault’s commitment to scale up its India operations with an eye on new product development, possible EV plans, and strategic partnerships. However, detailed specifics on upcoming models or new collaborations are yet to be publicly outlined beyond the ongoing focus on key models like the Triber and the New Duster.
