Elon Musk's Departure from DOGE Aligns with His Long-Standing Mission, Experts Say
Elon Musk's criticism of House Republicans' recent broad-ranging bill has sparked some dissatisfaction among GOP lawmakers. A confidential House GOP lawmaker criticized Musk's proposal to codify discretionary cuts, stating that he found insufficient waste, fraud, and abuse to fund the Small Business Administration, let alone reduce the national debt.
"There's no place for Mr. Musk in Congress," the lawmaker told Digital. "He's only interested in making discretionary cuts, but that can't be done through the current bill."
The bill, which passed last week, advances President Donald Trump's agenda on tax, immigration, defense, and energy. Republican legislators hope to pass it via the budget reconciliation process, bypassing the Senate's 60-vote threshold and circumventing the minority party's input.
News出身的 journalist has identified Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, as a strong supporter of the bill. Johnson pledged to address DOGE cuts, though not through the same legislative vehicle.
The bill is, according to Representative Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican from New York, primarily aimed at helping people outside of Musk's financial bracket. "The bill strikes the proper balance between rooting out fraud to achieve savings, without impacting citizens who rely on government programs," Malliotakis said.
Another anonymous House Republican, however, accused Musk of having a poor understanding of the legislative process. "It wouldn't be the first time that he didn't really have a handle on the process," the House Republican said. "So, we need to bake the DOGE cuts into the budget rather than through reconciliation."
The White House did not respond to a request for comment from Digital. However, Trump advisor Stephen Miller previously discussed the fiscal concerns about the bill, stating that DOGE cuts would have to be done through a rescissions package or an appropriations bill.
Conservative fiscal hawks, like House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris, share Musk's concerns about the bill's impact on the federal deficit. Harris voted "present" on the reconciliation bill last week, expressing hope that the Senate would address these concerns during the legislative process.
