Public Transport in Hesse: RMV and NVV Embrace Modernization and Sustainability

Amidst the current rollout of the Germany Ticket, the landscape of public transportation (PT) in Hesse experiences a dramatic transformation, with the Rhein-Main Transport Association (RMV) and Nordhessischer Verkehrsverbund (NVV) spearheading the shift.

The RMV, established in 1995, introduced a unified timetable, ticket, and pricing system, significantly boosting passenger numbers. At its launch, the motto was "one timetable, one ticket, one fare." Thirty years ago, the simplicity of public transportation led to a surge in usage.

Last year, the RMV reached a record 825 million passengers. The association's managing director, Knut Ringat, anticipates this trend will continue, noting that ongoing construction projects in the RMV area might initially cause delays but will ultimately result in a better service offer. Ringat refers to this phase as the "decade of construction" and assures that "after five years, we will be able to offer a much better service."

Regarding criticism concerning staff shortages in control centers, Ringat expects improvement this year, crediting Deutsche Bahn's recent efforts to strengthen training and modernize control centers.

To bolster the railway's offerings, the RMV seeks additional funding from both federal and state governments to compensate for rising expenses and secure the purchase of additional trains after expansion.

Connecting rural regions better is essential for the RMV, which plans to rely on on-demand traffic, with vehicles becoming autonomous in pilot projects with Deutsche Bahn in Darmstadt and the Offenbach district.

meanwhile, the North Hessian Transport Association (NVV) based in Kassel targets rural areas that are less urbanized. The association has increased its offerings, particularly in bus traffic, with the "Every Village - Every Hour" campaign, which aims to ensure every location is reachable by bus or train at least once an hour. Passenger numbers in regional bus traffic increased by 10.3% compared to the previous year due to these measures and the Germany Ticket.

Financial support from the federal and state governments is vital for both urban and rural public transport, according to an NVV spokesperson, with further expansion requiring increased funding.

The RMV and NVV are set to celebrate their anniversaries this year, with the RMV launching a series of campaigns, actions, and prize draws for passengers, while the NVV launches a passenger campaign titled "You're the Best."

In Hesse, the RMV and NVV are championing ongoing modernization, network reforms, and sustainability goals, addressing challenges such as staff shortages, infrastructure improvements, and rural mobility with automated solutions, infrastructure upgrades, and innovative on-demand transport options. The federal and state governments' funding plays a crucial role in realizing these improvements for a reliable, accessible, and sustainable public transportation system in the region.

  1. As modernization leads the way for public transportation (PT) in Hesse, both the Rhein-Main Transport Association (RMV) and Nordhessischer Verbund (NVV) are advocating for expanded funding from the federal and state governments, particularly to address rural mobility and implement automated solutions.
  2. Thriving PT industries in Hesse's urban and rural areas are keen on sustainability, with the RMV aiming to implement autonomous vehicles in pilot projects and the NVV championing a campaign titled "Every Village - Every Hour" to enhance bus and train connections, reflecting their shared dedication to promoting a green and accessible transportation network.
