Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority Embraces Solar Energy

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is leading the charge in solar energy adoption within the transportation sector. The organisation has completed the installation of solar energy systems at 22 of its buildings and facilities, including bus depots, metro depots, passenger bus stations, and maintenance workshops.

These solar installations are tailored to the specific requirements of each site, generating about 32 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This initiative not only reduces RTA's reliance on traditional power sources but also prevents approximately 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Shaikha Ahmad Al Shaikh, Director of Buildings and Facilities at RTA, stated that the project aligns with Dubai's long-term vision for sustainable development. The solar energy project further reinforces Dubai's clean energy transformation and is part of RTA's commitment to environmental sustainability under the Zero-Emissions Strategy 2050, Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030.

Energy generation from these solar systems is monitored in real-time through DEWA's Shams Dubai Calculator. The solar panels have been installed at additional sites, including Al Quoz, Al Khawaneej, and Al Rowaiyah bus depots, Al Satwa and Oud Metha bus stations, maintenance workshops in Al Muhaisnah, and various metro depots. Although the exact number of new sites was not specified, it is clear that the RTA's solar energy project is expanding across the city.

These efforts by the RTA are part of Dubai’s broader solar energy expansion, exemplified by the rapid growth of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The park is expanding by 800 MW in 2025 to reach a total capacity of 3,427 MW. Although DEWA primarily leads the park’s expansion, RTA’s solar projects at transport facilities complement these large-scale renewable projects, collectively advancing Dubai’s transition to clean and sustainable energy.

In summary, the RTA’s solar energy installations and energy efficiency upgrades generate substantial clean electricity locally at transport facilities, reduce carbon emissions significantly, and support Dubai’s overall clean energy transformation alongside large-scale national solar projects. This integrated approach demonstrates the RTA’s active role in sustaining Dubai’s leadership in renewable energy adoption within the transportation sector. The solar energy project is a step towards a more sustainable urban future for Dubai.
