Under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Regional Green Economy Forum (RGEF) 2025 took place in Tangier, Morocco. The forum, inaugurated by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO), brought together ministers, mayors, youth leaders, and global experts to discuss sustainable urban development and the path to carbon neutrality in African cities.

The theme of the RGEF 2025, "Empowering African Cities: Paving the Path to Carbon Neutrality," reflected the forum's focus on fostering green transitions in urban environments. Al Tayer, in his keynote, emphasised the urgency of climate action and the pivotal role of cities in driving this transition.

The WGEO's Carbon Neutral Cities Initiative (CNCI) was a central topic of discussion at the forum. This program, designed to empower cities to take concrete steps towards sustainability and carbon neutrality, aims to promote sustainable urban development by supporting cities in reducing their carbon footprints, enhancing resilience, and adopting green economy principles.

The CNCI's role in African cities is to provide frameworks, tools, and collaborative platforms to help cities implement low-carbon urban planning, sustainable mobility, renewable energy adoption, and community engagement. WGEO's involvement often facilitates knowledge sharing and partnerships among cities to accelerate green transitions.

Al Tayer also lauded Morocco for its dedication to climate goals and urged young leaders to become active changemakers in building a sustainable, equitable future. The forum fostered public-private partnerships and youth involvement, with the Youth Roundtable being a significant part of the event.

The RGEF 2025's outcomes will influence the upcoming World Green Economy Summit 2025 in Dubai. The forum did not introduce any new initiatives or announcements, but rather focused on discussions and speakers. The forum's outcomes will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing efforts to address climate change and foster sustainable growth across multiple regions, including Africa.
