Saudi Arabia Boosts Water Capacity with Rabigh 4 IWP
Saudi Arabia's water infrastructure expands with the signing of the Water Purchase Agreement (WPA) for the Rabigh 4 Independent Water Plant (IWP). The project, with a total cost of SR 2.54 billion (US$ 677 million), is set to boost the Kingdom's water production capacity.
ACWA Power, in collaboration with Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co (HAACO) and Al Moayyed Contracting Group (AMCG), is developing the Rabigh 4 IWP. The project secured a significant milestone with the signing of the WPA earlier this year by the Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC).
The Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract has been awarded to a consortium comprising Power China, SEPCOIII, led by Chairman ZHAO Qiming, and WETICO. The project is expected to create new job opportunities during both its construction and operation phases.
ACWA Power, a leading international developer, owner, and operator of power generation and water desalination plants, has shown remarkable growth in the region. In 2022 alone, the company added 2.4 million m3/day of water desalination capacity through four desalination plants in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the UAE. Currently, ACWA Power operates 16 desalination plants in four countries, with ten in Saudi Arabia, meeting 30% of the Kingdom's water demand.
Upon completion, the Rabigh 4 IWP will double ACWA Power's desalination capacity in the Rabigh area to 1.2 million m3/day. This significant addition will make ACWA Power the largest private producer of desalinated water globally, further strengthening its commitment to supporting Saudi Arabia's water infrastructure.
