Shell's REFHYNE II Project Aims to Boost Green Hydrogen Production

In a significant step towards a greener future, Shell has announced the launch of the REFHYNE II project at the Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland in Germany. This ambitious initiative, focused on developing a 100 MW green hydrogen production facility, is set to play a pivotal role in Shell's renewable hydrogen development plans in the heart of Germany's industrial sector.

Worley, a global leader in project delivery, is lending its deep domain knowledge, local delivery capabilities, and sector expertise to support Shell in this transformation endeavour. The company has been instrumental in the Assess, Select, and Define phases of the project, and will continue to collaborate with Shell in the coming years to achieve the Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland's transformation goals.

The REFHYNE II project will install a 100 MW electrolyzer, expected to produce up to 44,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen daily. This hydrogen will be used to produce energy products with lower carbon intensity and to decarbonize operations. Notably, the repurposed hydrocracker and electrification of the project are expected to reduce Shell's scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by around 620,000 tonnes a year.

ITM Power, a leading provider of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, will supply the TRIDENT PEM stacks and skids for the project. Linde, acting as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor, will oversee the project's execution. The contract for the 100 MW TRIDENT PEM stacks and skids was signed shortly after the project received a final investment decision (FID) in August 2024.

The hydrogen produced by REFHYNE II will supply Shell's Rheinland refinery as well as local mobility fleets, thereby supporting green hydrogen mobility initiatives in the region. The project expands upon the initial REFHYNE project at the same site, aiming to significantly increase green hydrogen output and contribute to Shell’s broader energy transition strategy.

André van Drunen, Managing Director at Worley, expressed his excitement about the long-term collaboration with Shell at the Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland, stating that key projects will be worked on in the coming years to achieve the park's transformation goal. Marijn Bezuijen, Project Director Rheinland, also expressed enthusiasm about the Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland's transformation journey to become a net zero emissions company by 2050.

The detailed design and procurement stages of the project are currently being focused on, with efforts aimed at meeting necessary standards for functionality, safety, and regulatory compliance. The project, which is one of the largest green hydrogen electrolyzer facilities in Europe, represents a central piece in Shell’s renewable hydrogen development plans in Germany.

The Wesseling site, part of the Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland near Cologne, will cease processing crude oils in 2025. With the REFHYNE II project, Shell is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable future, leveraging Worley's expertise to make these key projects a success.
