Shortened and rephrased: GD's stance on Russia implementing a four-day work week revealed.
Russia's State Duma committee chairman, Yaroslav Nilov, has expressed his thoughts on the potential implementation of a four-day workweek in certain sectors of the Russian economy.
In a report by TASS, Nilov stated that while some organisations in the country are already operating on a four-day or even three-day workweek, optimising resources and maintaining employee incomes, the new work format cannot be a universal approach for all professions.
Nilov highlighted that certain jobs, such as those in the medical field and piecework, require a consistent and on-site presence, making a reduced schedule and remote work ineffective. He emphasised that a doctor will not perform surgery remotely, and a pieceworker's productivity may be affected by the lack of continuous supervision.
The discussion on a four-day workweek began in 2019, initiated by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. However, according to Nilov, there were no specific individual figures clearly identified in Russia as having initiated the topic apart from the Prime Minister, as per the available search results.
Nilov also stressed that the reduction in working hours should occur naturally and without coercive measures from the state. He believes that the evolution of the labor market should happen "step by step and synergistically".
Recently, there has been an increase in the number of Russian workers receiving below-MROT wages, which is the minimum subsistence level established by the Russian government. This economic situation has sparked discussions about the need for labour reforms, including the possibility of a shorter workweek.
Despite the ongoing debate, Nilov did not specify a timeline for the implementation of the four-day workweek, stating it would not happen "today, not tomorrow, and not the day after tomorrow". He added that the decision should be made based on the needs of each individual organisation and profession, ensuring the well-being and productivity of the workforce.
