Smoldering Blaze in the Ex-Elberfelder Heating Facility

Welding work on conveyor belts resulted in a conspicuous plume of smoke, reportedly seen from a distance. As per the incident commander, the smoke was caused by the residues from the welding process catching fire.

In a recent turn of events, Bayer AG, the renowned German pharmaceutical and life sciences company, has acquired the site of the former Elberfeld power station. However, concrete plans for the future development of the area are yet to be revealed.

The power station, built in July 1898 and operational from 1900, was shut down in July 2018. The property owner, Heizkraftwerk Wuppertal-Elberfeld Vermögensverwaltungsgesellschaft mbH, announced that demolition work would resume in the afternoon, following a fire incident caused by welding work on conveyor belts during demolition operations. The fire was promptly extinguished by the Bayer fire station's firefighters using foam.

Interestingly, it was a different company that won the contract for the redevelopment of the power station. This company had previously invested in a redevelopment project in a former power station in Bad Oeynhausen.

Despite the acquisition, Bayer has been tight-lipped about its plans for the Elberfeld power station site. Site manager Bert Lorenz stated that the acquisition is strategically important for Bayer's location in Wuppertal. In a separate development, Bayer AG sold 20 partially listed residential buildings on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße to a private investor group in May 2025.

Initially, investors had plans for a hotel and event complex on the Elberfeld power station site. However, these plans could not be implemented due to safety concerns near the Bayer plant. As a result, the site was sold, and now, Bayer AG is the new owner.

One notable feature that will remain after the demolition work is completed is the 190-meter-high chimney of the Elberfeld power station. The operation of the suspension railway was temporarily suspended due to the incident, and the Kabelstraße and Simonsstraße were closed.

While the specifics of Bayer's involvement in the former Heizkraftwerk site at Wuppertal-Elberfeld and the development plans for the area are yet to be documented, it is recommended to consult Bayer AG’s official communications, the Wuppertal municipal planning office, or recent local news outlets covering industrial site developments for the latest and most precise information.

  1. The acquisition of the Heizkraftwerk Wuppertal-Elberfeld property by Bayer AG opens up possibilities for investing in the real-estate industry, as the company has strategically positioned itself in Wuppertal with this move.
  2. Amidst the general news of the fire incident during the demolition work at the former Elberfeld power station, it's important to mention that the company responsible for the site's redevelopment had previously ventured into finance by investing in a redevelopment project in Bad Oeynhausen.
  3. In an unexpected twist of events, despite initial plans for a hotel and event complex, the safety concerns near Bayer AG's plant led to the sale of the former Elberfeld power station property, and numerous finance industries are now keeping a keen eye on the company's future plans for the site, especially concerning the 190-meter-high chimney that will remain after demolition.
