The Veltins Heir's Unfortunate Million-Dollar Battle
Son of Veltin embarks on war for immense fortune promised in inheritance
The never-ending saga of the Veltins brewery inheritance dispute has come to a close. Carl-Clemens Veltins, son of the late CEO, failed to secure a substantial share and his claim to a forced share expired, according to the regional court.
Originating from one of Germany's most prosperous brewing families, Carl-Clemens will not be basking in the glory of a seven-figure inheritance any time soon. In her will, his mother, the long-time matriarch, disinherited him in favor of her two sisters. The court ruled against Carl-Clemens, who had contested the will.
The judges solidified their decision, stating, "The explicit disinheritance of a child must be respected." Any prospects of a compulsory share have long been time-barred, the court ruled.
Despite the impending disappointment, Carl-Clemens seemed calm before the trial commenced. With approximately €30 million on the line and a €360,000 court deposit already paid, he was asked why he had waited so many years to bring the case to court. His response, "When someone provided me with the money, I could bring the lawsuit."
Carl-Clemens attempted to dispute the will by arguing his mother was of unsound mind when it was drafted. His sisters' side refutes this claim. The family entrepreneur was reportedly active in the business until her death, according to their lawyers.
The court did not support this argument, finding no evidence to suggest his mother lacked the capacity to draw up the will. Interestingly, neither sister attended the trial. One of them, Susanne Veltins, co-runs the brewery with her nephew, one of the most celebrated in Germany.
Business As Usual for Veltins
Boasting a third place ranking amongst Germany's most popular beers, Veltins' brewery generates over €460 million in revenue and employs more than 700 people in the Hochsauerland district. While the legal battle has no immediate impact on the business, the company remains adamant that this is a family matter.
As for the lawyers, they stay tight-lipped, largely refusing to comment on the family dispute. Carl-Clemens, however, took to the platform to share his perspective on a family he believes sought to cheat him from the beginning: "I knew nothing. I swear."
The court swiftly dismissed this, emphasizing, "There are certain duties and responsibilities when pursuing one's rights." Therefore, the statute of limitations still applied despite Carl-Clemens' alleged lack of awareness and understanding. His repeated claims of ignorance, never receiving a will, and poor advice fell on deaf ears as the court held him accountable for these duties.
