Spain's Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Faces Hurdles

Spain is ramping up its electric vehicle charging infrastructure, aiming to install 189 charging points per day before the end of 2024. However, bureaucratic obstacles and a shortage of installers threaten to slow progress.

Currently, Spain has around 30,000 charging stations, but an additional 60,000 are needed by the end of 2024. The goal is to reach 91,000 by 2025, 300,000 by 2030, and a whopping 610,000 by 2035. However, the current installation rate is unattainable, according to Ricard Puiggros of emovili.

To meet these targets, strong public and private investment is required. Regulatory procedures need simplification, and infrastructure solutions must be scalable. Integration of renewable energy sources like solar power is also crucial. Collaboration among technology providers, energy companies, and government agencies is vital to accelerate deployment and maintain quality and efficiency.

CargaTuCoche estimates a 25% increase in charging point installers is needed in 2024, equivalent to 300 new jobs. However, delays and bureaucratic obstacles are hindering installations, with authorization procedures taking up to 18 months. Joan Groizard of IDAE notes that smaller municipalities lack resources to apply deployment tools. Even worse, a quarter of Spain's installed charging points are not operational due to poor condition, damage, or lack of connection to the power grid, leaving more than 8,000 points unavailable for use.

Spain's ambitious charging point targets require urgent action. Streamlined permitting, increased investment, and a significant boost in installers are needed to overcome bureaucratic hurdles and ensure the availability of charging points for the growing number of electric vehicles on Spain's roads.
