Spotify Accuses Apple of Blocking App Features, Seeks Independence from Revenue Model

Spotify has accused Apple of blocking access to products and updates for their app. Apple, in response, has informed Spotify that they are working on integrating Siri and AirPlay 2 support into the Spotify app. This news comes as Spotify continues to grow, with the majority of its users opting for the free, ad-supported version and a significant portion coming through mobile carrier partnerships.

Spotify's Apple Watch app, launched in September 2018 and reviewed and approved by Apple, has become the top app in the Watch Music category. Despite this success, Spotify claims that Apple is preventing them from accessing features and updates for their app. Spotify has also expressed its desire to avoid Apple's revenue-sharing model, with only a tiny fraction of their subscriptions currently falling under it. Spotify is pushing for zero of their subscriptions to be subject to this model.

Spotify's allegations against Apple highlight the ongoing tension between the two tech giants. While Apple works on improving the Spotify app's integration with its ecosystem, Spotify continues to advocate for its independence from Apple's revenue-sharing model. The impact of these developments on Spotify's user base, particularly those using Apple devices, remains to be seen.
