Cabinet Secretary Ruku Tours Huduma Centres in Nairobi, Stresses Meritocracy and Efficiency
Geoffrey Ruku, Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes, has been making impromptu visits to Huduma Centres across the country to assess public service delivery and engage with frontline staff.
Last week, Ruku visited the General Post Office and Eastleigh Huduma Centres in Nairobi. During these visits, he praised the staff for their professionalism, resilience, and innovation in delivering essential services, despite limited resources.
Ruku emphasized the need for the Public Service Commission to uphold integrity and meritocracy in public sector recruitment and promotion processes. He warned against favouritism, nepotism, and other unfair practices that hinder efficiency and morale in the public service.
The visits were unannounced, allowing Ruku to gain a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by public servants on a daily basis. He reiterated that public service is a responsibility, not a privilege, and that every officer in the public sector should remember they are there to serve Kenyans first.
Ruku's visits are aimed at assessing the delivery of government services to Kenyans in need. He declared that the era of rewarding incompetence is over in the public service and pledged to accelerate the transformation of Kenya's public sector culture.
In addition to these visits in Nairobi, Ruku officially launched the 59th Huduma Centre in Mogotio, Baringo County, which is fully powered by solar energy. This centre is part of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), aimed at bringing government services closer to the grassroots.
These efforts form part of broader reforms seeking to enhance service delivery efficiency and foster accountability aligned with constitutional values that underscore transparency and effective use of public resources. By placing citizens at the heart of service delivery, Ruku aims to keep public service grounded in the needs of the people.
