Swiss Steel Group Launches EU-Funded HYDREAMS Project for Hydrogen in Steel Production

Swiss Steel Group is embarking on a significant project to explore the use of hydrogen in steel production. The EU-funded HYDREAMS initiative aims to create technical findings, safety assessments, and cost analyses for this alternative energy source. The transition, however, carries potential risks such as increased NOx emissions and impacts on steel quality and furnace lifespan.

The project will involve three industrial trials, starting with the first in March 2025, to test hydrogen combustion in different heating processes and on various steel grades. Initial tests on 13 steel grades showed no negative effects on material quality, indicating promising prospects.

Swiss Steel Group views hydrogen technology as a viable alternative to electric heating in the project management of the steel industry. The company is investigating the replacement of natural gas with hydrogen in steel treatment, with the goal of proving the practical feasibility of this approach by 2026. Ugitech, a subsidiary of Swiss Steel Group, plans to build an electrolyzer plant for hydrogen production, with a capacity of up to 12 tons per day.

Through the HYDREAMS project, Swiss Steel Group aims to demonstrate the practicality of hydrogen use in steel treatment. By 2026, three industrial demonstrators are expected to provide concrete evidence of this technology's potential, paving the way for a more sustainable future in steel production.
