Switzerland's Cities Have Room for 1M More Residents: Study
Switzerland's major cities have significant potential for densification, according to a recent study by Sotomo. This could create space for nearly a million people.
The study found that 30% of Switzerland's existing settlement area could be developed inwards, with 8% substantially and 22% moderately. This means that 70% of today's settlements remain untouched.
The agglomeration of Geneva, including Vernier, Pregny-Chambésy, and Meyrin, and parts of the Bern agglomeration also show potential for densification. However, the study did not provide specific details about the exact cities with the most notable potential zones for density increase in major Swiss cities outside Zurich and Geneva.
The agglomeration of Zurich, particularly the municipality of Schwerzenbach, stands out with pronounced potential for densification. This could lead to the creation of additional housing for 870,000 people in Switzerland's most important city communities.
Densification in Switzerland's major cities could provide space for nearly a million people, according to Sotomo's analysis. This could help address housing shortages in the country's most important city communities.
