Tesla's Schedule in Week 42/24: Complete Paris Agenda, FSD Testing, Robot-Related Information, Musk's Support for Trump
The Paris Motor Show, a renowned event in the automotive industry, recently showcased an array of new electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids. Among the manufacturers presenting their latest creations were Leapmotor, Renault, Stellantis, Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, and VW.
Leapmotor unveiled the compact European E-SUV B10, while Renault introduced the new 4, a compact electric SUV, and Stellantis gave a glimpse of the Citroen C5 Aircross. Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, and VW displayed various electric and plugin hybrid vehicles.
Tesla, another prominent player in the EV market, also participated in the event, showcasing the Model 3, Model X, and Cybertruck. The Model Y was also present, now available in Europe with an optional seven-seat configuration.
However, Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system has come under scrutiny by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The regulatory body has initiated a preliminary investigation to determine if the system adequately responds to reduced visibility. The investigation affects Tesla models from their respective first production years up to 2024, estimated to be around 2.4 million vehicles.
The investigation was triggered by four reported incidents involving activated FSD Supervised or previous FSD Beta, one of which resulted in a pedestrian fatality. The update to address these concerns has become the subject of a new investigation.
Despite these concerns, Tesla demonstrated its autonomy capabilities at the October 10th event. The demonstration was reported to be perfectly safe, and the autonomy shown was close to the production AI software or will be shipped soon in v13. Ashok Elluswamy, Vice President AI Software at Tesla, reported that 19 Cybercabs and 29 Model Ys drove themselves at the event.
Meanwhile, Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, made headlines for his political endorsements. Musk has openly supported Republican candidate Trump and contributed $75 million to his campaign. Since Musk's public endorsement in July, Trump has mentioned him 82 times in 144 appearances and has been less critical of electric cars. Musk even planned half a dozen campaign appearances in Pennsylvania and spoke for over an hour and a half about various topics, including AI.
In a separate development, BYD debuted the Sealion 07, set to arrive in Europe as its eighth model by the end of the year. The Optimus robot, although on display at the Paris Motor Show, was only behind glass and stationary. However, Optimus can now navigate using its 2D cameras in indoor environments without the use of GPS.
The NHTSA's investigation is the first step that could lead to a regulatory recall, although this is rarely the case. The investigation's outcome and Tesla's response will be closely watched by the industry and consumers alike.
