The European Council celebrated the Commission's action initiating a fresh stage of the project.
The breakthrough of the Brenner Base Tunnel, a major infrastructure project that promises faster, climate-friendly freight and passenger transport, was celebrated in a festive ceremony attended by high-ranking officials from Austria, Italy, and the European Union.
Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker emphasized the importance of such infrastructure projects in driving growth and prosperity. He stated, "The internal market of the European Union can only function and grow if there is appropriate infrastructure as a foundation, and economy and prosperity can only flourish if the way is literally paved for them."
The Minister of Transport for Austria, Peter Hanke, and his Italian counterpart, Matteo Salvini, were also present at the ceremony. European Commissioner for Transport Apostolos Tzitzikostas and Italian President Giorgia Meloni also attended the event, underscoring the significance of the occasion.
The Chancellor highlighted the need for a long-term solution that includes rail traffic, acknowledging the enormous strains caused by the Brenner motorway on the people, the environment, and the quality of life in the entire region. He urged for a return to discussions with Italy and Germany to work on solutions for the entire system.
Until a comprehensive solution is found, temporary measures are necessary. Stocker called for smart and practical answers for the road to alleviate the immediate pressures.
In a poignant moment, Stocker emphasized the need for decisions to serve the interest of the people, countries, and a strong European Union. He acknowledged the argument of free trade but emphasized that it cannot outweigh the health and well-being of the people of Tyrol.
The Chancellor described the breakthrough of the Brenner Base Tunnel as a "historic moment" for Austria, Italy, and the European community, seeing it as a symbol of cooperation, unity, and a shared vision. He also stated that the Brenner Base Tunnel is not just an engineering marvel, but also a political opportunity.
The breakthrough of the Brenner Base Tunnel is seen as a symbol of neighborly cooperation and the combination of states' strengths. It is a significant step towards more sustainable, faster, and climate-friendly transport, and a testament to the power of collaboration in achieving shared goals.
