Toyota reveals the latest RAV4 Sport Utility Vehicle, a versatile option for all activities.

Newly Unveiled Toyota RAV4: An Enhanced Hybrid SUV for Everyday Driving

After seven years, Toyota has introduced a new iteration of their traditional SUV, the RAV4. Designed with evolutionary advancements and a plethora of technology, the latest RAV4 seeks to appease its target audience of unassuming car enthusiasts.

For years, Toyota has been criticized for producing dull cars. However, former CEO Akio Toyoda seemed keen on dispelling such criticisms, coining the phrase, "never build a boring car." Despite the RAV4's reputation for being an unpretentious, all-rounder vehicle straddling the line between compact and mid-size classes, the latest model features visually sharper design elements without straying into flashy territory.

The updated appearance of the new RAV4 features a modernized and slightly aggressive front end reminiscent of the popular C-HR. The headlight layout has been modernized, while the prominent cascading groove running from the C-pillar to the sill gives the vehicle a more muscular appearance. The bold wheel arches, distinctive on the predecessor, have received minimal tweaks and are now echoed interiorly. The angular architecture of the instrument cluster, steering wheel, and switches evoke the distinctive style that runs as a recurring theme through the RAV4's contemporary cabin.

Keeping it Old-School: Physical Buttons and a 360-Degree Camera

In terms of operation, the RAV4 stands out as a more conservative model compared to other automotive nations. The dashboard is adorned with a multitude of physical buttons, while digital natives aren't completely overlooked, with over 25 inches of monitor from the instrument cluster and central touchscreen. The improved, three-dimensional image from the 360-degree camera displayed in the center console aids in safe and efficient parking.

Under the hood, the RAV4's hybrid powertrain is a given, particularly with the newest plug-in variation offering approximately 100 kilometers of electric-only driving range, thanks to the 23 kWh lithium-ion battery. The capacity of the battery varies slightly by market:

  • North America: Delivers up to 50 miles of all-electric driving range, with the exact battery capacity not yet specified.
  • UK/Europe: Featuring a 22.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering an electric range of up to 62 miles.

Fast-Charging Capabilities and a GR Sport Edition

Charging the battery is now more efficient, with the option to charge it with up to 50 kW (direct current) via a CCS connection, allowing a charge from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes. This increased power output of the electric unit from 22 to 204 PS ensures smooth driving when using the vehicle's electric-only mode. The total system power is 304 PS, enabling the all-wheel-drive vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

A front-wheel-drive PHEV version with 268 PS is also available for those who prioritize fuel efficiency over all-wheel drive. The lineup further includes two full hybrid variants, with one offering 183 PS in front-wheel drive and all-wheel-drive variants boasting 191 PS.

Last but not least, the GR Sport trim is introduced for those seeking a more dynamic driving experience. This version offers more than just cosmetic enhancements, with modified dampers, a reinforced strut in the rear wheel suspension, and specific suspension tuning reportedly giving the GR Sport a distinct feel. The exterior is marked with black 20-inch Alura wheels and a mesh grille, emphasizing the sportier RAV4. Additionally, the GR Sport comes equipped with an expanded suite of driver assistance features, such as smartphone-based parking and lane change assist. The RAV4 GR Sport will be available starting spring 2026.
