Repeated Closures of Crimean Bridge Due to Ukrainian Drone Attacks

Traffic halted on Crimean bridge for over seven hours, leaving approximately 2,000 vehicles stranded.

On August 7, 2025, the Crimean Bridge experienced repeated closures due to a series of drone attacks, as part of an intensified Ukrainian strike campaign against Russian military and strategic infrastructure.

At 02:08, traffic on the bridge was halted due to an unknown incident. As of 08:00, there were 1,470 vehicles in the manual inspection queue on the Taman side of the bridge, with a waiting time of around four hours. Simultaneously, on the Kerch side, there were 850 vehicles in the queue, with a waiting time of approximately three hours.

The Crimean Bridge resumed normal operation at 07:45, but was closed again at 08:22. These closures were a direct result of drone incursions triggering heightened security measures.

Ukraine's evolving strategy involves targeting Russia's "nerve centres" in its air defense network to create lasting operational gaps and reduce Russia’s ability to detect and respond to incoming strikes. The destruction of a rare and advanced Russian S-500 air defense radar system (the 98L6 Yenisei radar) located in southern Crimea significantly weakened Russian surveillance and ballistic missile defense around strategic targets such as the naval bases and the Crimean Bridge.

These drone attacks were not limited to the bridge. Overnight on August 7, fires occurred at an oil refinery in Afipsky due to a drone attack, and overnight in Slaviansk-na-Kubani, a fire also occurred at a military base. The Ministry of Defense reported intercepting 82 drones over various regions, including 11 over Crimea.

Russia reported shooting down multiple Ukrainian drones over Crimea during this period, indicating ongoing drone threats in the area. The repeated closures of the Crimean Bridge, while specific to the bridge area, were part of a wider-ranging series of Ukrainian drone strikes targeting oil infrastructure, military depots, and production facilities across Crimea and other Russian-controlled areas.

In summary, the repeated closures of the Crimean Bridge starting August 7, 2025, were caused by successful Ukrainian drone strikes focusing on dismantling critical Russian air defense radar systems and increased drone activity in the region, which raised security concerns and complicated Russian control of the bridge area.

  1. The repeated closures of the Crimean Bridge, a key transportation link, were attributed to a series of drone attacks, as Ukraine's war-and-conflicts strategy evolved to target Russia's strategic infrastructure, including the automotive industry and finance sector.
  2. Simultaneously, various regions experienced drone attacks on oil infrastructure, military depots, and production facilities, indicating a broader impact on the general news of the ongoing conflict.
  3. In politics, the tensions between Russia and Ukraine were exacerbated as Ukraine's strikes weakened Russian surveillance and ballistic missile defense systems, such as the S-500 radar.
  4. As a result, the ongoing crime-and-justice issue of repeated drone incursions led to increased security measures, complicating day-to-day operations and raising concerns about the safety and efficiency of various industries in the region.
