First Trams Resume Service on Wuhlheide Streetcar Line

Berlin, Germany - The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) announced the resumption of tram service on the Wuhlheide streetcar line this morning, marking the return of public transportation in the area after a bridge deemed at risk of collapse forced its closure.

Initially, a shuttle service on line M17 operates every 10 minutes between Blockdammweg and S-Bahnhof Schoeneweide, with the other streetcar lines still experiencing detours. The BVG spokesperson reported a smooth start to the service.

The overhead lines and tracks were inspected, rebuilt, and reconnected before resuming traffic, the BVG noted. Pedestrians and cyclists can also use Treskowallee on Edisonstrasse again. However, traffic light installations are yet to be restored, with personnel managing streetcar operations and pedestrian and bicycle traffic at the intersection. Emergency vehicles, police, and fire brigade should be able to pass through the area.

Motorists will have to wait longer for easements at the demolition site, with initial relief planned for June 6, 2025, depending on construction progress and weather conditions, according to the transport administration. Six of the nine construction fields have been demolished already, with the entire demolition scheduled to be completed by June 27, 2025.

Berlin's traffic administration cautions that motor vehicle traffic will likely face disruptions until the demolition is completed.

  1. The employment policy of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) may need to be adjusted to accommodate the increased demand for streetcar operators due to the resumption of service on the Wuhlheide streetcar line.
  2. Stakeholders in the community, finance, industry, public-transit, and transportation sectors may need to collaborate with the BVG to address any potential financial implications arising from the bridge collapse and subsequent service disruptions on the Wuhlheide streetcar line.
