Trams Resume Service on Wuhlheide Bridge Once More - Trams resume service for the first time.

In the German capital of Berlin, the first trams have resumed service on the Wuhlheide streetcar route following a long suspension due to a bridge's imminent collapse. The Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) announced the resumption of service, stating that the initial phase will see a shuttle service of line M17 operating every 10 minutes between Blockdammweg and S-Bahn station Schoeneweide.

The spokesperson for BVG reported a smooth start to operations, despite the need for experts to inspect tracks, rebuild and connect the overhead lines before traffic could be restarted in the morning. Other streetcar lines will continue to operate on detours for the time being.

Regular bus replacement traffic has ceased, and, as of Saturday, all lines in the area are expected to return to their usual schedules. A transition period is necessary for adjusting all information systems, duties, and timetables to ensure stable operation.

Pedestrians and cyclists can now use Treskowallee on Edisonstraße once again, though there is currently no traffic light at the intersection. Traffic controllers are managing streetcar operations, as well as pedestrian and bicycle traffic at this intersection. Emergency vehicles, police, and fire services should also be able to navigate the area, albeit in the direction of Treskowallee/Edisonstraße.

Motorists face a longer wait. The Wuhlheide Bridge demolition has caused significant disruptions to both road and rail traffic, and initial relief for car traffic is only planned by June 6, 2025, dependent on construction progress and weather conditions. Six of the nine demolition sites have been completed, with the entire construction site aimed to be completed by no later than June 27, 2025[1].
