Tuna Fisheries Commit to Enhanced Transparency and Accountability

The Tuna Transparency Pledge, a global initiative launched in April 2024, is making significant strides in promoting transparency and sustainable practices within the tuna industry. The pledge aims to achieve 100% on-the-water monitoring across all industrial tuna fishing vessels by 2027, with a vision of a thriving global marine environment.

The pledge has attracted major companies and new country members such as the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Palau, and Panama, increasing its geographic and market influence on tuna sourcing. Signatories include major retailers, food service companies, seafood suppliers, and global tuna industry actors like Carrefour, Aramark, Culimer USA, Lusamerica Foods, Pacific Island Tuna, and the Association of Large Freezer Tuna Vessels (AGAC).

One of the key aspects of the pledge is the adoption of electronic monitoring, using onboard video cameras, GPS, and sensors to monitor and verify fishing activities. This innovation can strengthen transparency and provide critical data needed for the sustainable management of tuna and other ocean species. The pledge also aims to eliminate Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing and improve fair labor practices.

The Tuna Transparency Pledge is supported by a variety of NGO, industry, and governmental collaborators. Environmental organizations like The Nature Conservancy are collaborating with regional bodies to strengthen the pledge’s implementation and support broader sustainable ocean management.

The impact of the pledge is already evident. Widespread industry adoption, enhanced monitoring goals, and supply chain scrutiny are fostering industry-wide shifts toward more accountable and sustainable tuna fisheries management. While its full impact is still unfolding, early outcomes suggest that the pledge is a promising step towards addressing unsustainable and illegal fishing practices at sea.

For those interested in building a positive industry change, they can email [email protected] to join the Tuna Transparency Pledge. It's important to note that three billion people worldwide rely on seafood as a significant source of protein, making the sustainable management of tuna fisheries crucial for both the environment and global nutrition.

Industrial fishing occurs on more than half of the ocean's surface, and lack of on-the-water monitoring and data is a significant obstacle to sustainably managing global tuna fisheries and protecting ocean wildlife. The Tuna Transparency Pledge is a significant step towards addressing these challenges and ensuring a sustainable future for our oceans and the people who depend on them.
