In the heart of Berlin, a series of significant developments and tunnel rescue operations are underway.

The Covivio development team is constructing a 130-meter-high office tower, which includes a 136-meter-high base building with retail spaces and 220 rental apartments. However, due to the ongoing tunnel rescue operations, the completion of the Covivio high-rise is now expected to be delayed until the end of 2026.

The tunnel in question is part of the U-Bahn line U2, which is currently undergoing modernization. The modernization is expected to cost around ten million euros and will resume regular operation in the Alexanderplatz area from August 2023.

To stabilize and rebuild the U-Bahn tunnel, Covivio has been working on a technical solution. Meanwhile, 256 injection rods will be driven into the excavation wall over an area of 16 x 45 meters to compact the soil and bring the tunnel back to its original position. The excavation wall itself must then be stabilized with steel anchors, a process expected to be completed within five months.

To accommodate U-Bahn passengers during this time, the headway of tram line M1 is being shortened. The goal is that the M1 line will run every 5 minutes instead of every 7.5 minutes starting in early April.

BVG CEO Rolf Erfurt stated that unfortunately, for security reasons, trains cannot run beyond Senefelderplatz to Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz during these operations.

State Secretary Niedbal from the Ministry of Mobility and Senator Bettina Jarasch (The Greens) have emphasized the need for risk analysis and agreements on good neighborliness for future construction projects near U-Bahn tunnels. Ephraim Gothe, the district mayor of Mitte, has also stated that in the future, larger precautions should be taken for projects involving sensitive transportation infrastructure.

If everything goes according to plan, work could begin in March and end in August this year. More pictures of the Covivio project can be found on Covivio's website, along with related articles such as "The U5 Extension in Words and Images
