Tunnel beneath the Elbe River temporarily shut for a duration of five days - Tunnel under Elbe River to undergo temporary closure for a duration of five days.

The historic Old Elbtunnel in Hamburg, Germany, will be closed for five consecutive days starting from Monday, January 20th, 2025. This pedestrian and cyclist tunnel, built in 1911 and spanning approximately 426 meters under the Elbe River, is renowned for its Art Deco design and ceramic animal figures along the walls.

During the closure, pedestrians and cyclists will not be able to access the Old Elbtunnel. Cyclists will be rerouted via the Freihafen Elb Bridge, which will be signposted during the Old Elbtunnel closure.

Meanwhile, the Elbe Tunnel on the A7 motorway will not be affected by this closure. However, motorists should be aware of scheduled maintenance closures on the A7 motorway Elbe tunnel, which will last about a week each in April and July 2025. During these periods, traffic on the A7 towards Flensburg will be closed between Heimfeld and Volkspark junctions, and southbound traffic will be closed between Volkspark and Hausbruch junctions. Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes around these junctions during these tunnel closures.

The Old Elbtunnel's closure is due to construction work being carried out in the west tube of the tunnel. The Hamburg Port Authority announced the closure, but no information about potential hazardous vapors or specific health risks has been disclosed. If you require details about hazardous vapors or specific health risks, additional sources or official authorities should be consulted.

The Old Elbtunnel, which connects St. Pauli on the northern shore to the Elbe island of Steinwerder on the southern shore, is a unique walking and cycling attraction when open. It is open 24/7 except during specific renovation periods. The St. Pauli Tunnel is part of the Old Elbtunnel.

This temporary closure of the Old Elbtunnel is a reminder of the ongoing maintenance and renovation work required to preserve this historic landmark for future generations to enjoy.

The Commission has announced that the ongoing maintenance and renovation work on the Old Elbtunnel will also involve the industry of public-transit transportation, as alternative routes will be provided for pedestrians and cyclists during the closure. Moreover, during scheduled maintenance closures on the A7 motorway Elbe tunnel, drivers may have to consider finance implications due to potential delays and the need for alternative transportation routes.
