Two prominent transport companies, National Express and Alsa, combine efforts to establish a dominant presence in the coach travel sector, branding their alliance as the "Coach Powerhouse".

In a significant move for the UK and European coach industry, National Express and Alsa have announced plans to merge in January 2026, creating a pan-European coach powerhouse. This merger unites two highly respected leaders in their respective UK and Spanish markets.

Javier Martinez Prieto, with over 30 years of experience with Alsa, has been appointed as the new Managing Director for National Express UK Coach. Javier, most recently serving as Purchasing and Maintenance Director at Alsa, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role.

In the coming months, Javier will work closely with current National Express UK and Germany CEO, Kevin Gale, to ensure a smooth transition. Kevin will continue to lead National Express UK and Germany, while Ignacio Gallego will serve as the head of the combined coach business. Victor Lopez, General Manager of Alsa Spain and UK, will lead the combined coach business.

The integration aims to combine market expertise and unlock strategic efficiencies, advancing National Express' strategic growth and reinforcing its competitive position. The merger also seeks to strengthen the ability of the combined company to deliver a great transport service for customers across the UK and Europe.

National Express, the UK's number one scheduled coach operator, trusted and loved by millions of customers each year, will retain its brand in the UK transport sector. The merger is expected to create a more robust and competitive company, better equipped to meet the needs of its customers and the wider industry.

The integration of National Express and Alsa is a testament to the strength of both companies and their commitment to providing excellent transport services. With Javier Martinez Prieto at the helm, National Express UK Coach is poised for a bright future as part of this pan-European powerhouse.

In the meantime, Kevin Gale will work closely with Javier to ensure a seamless transition, ensuring that the high standards of service that National Express is known for continue uninterrupted. The merger is expected to be completed in January 2026, and more details about the integration will be announced in due course.

National Express, with its strong reputation and customer base, and Alsa, with its extensive experience and market presence, are set to create a formidable force in the European coach industry. The merger is expected to bring numerous benefits for both companies, their employees, and, most importantly, their customers.
