U.S. Imports Face 25% Customs Duties in Canada, Affecting Tesla and Other Electric Vehicles
The United States has implemented new tariffs on electric vehicles, a move that could significantly impact the Canadian market. The tariffs, which take effect from Tuesday, include a 25% duty on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods.
The tariffs were justified by President Trump as a means to pressure Canada to do more to stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States. However, the move could potentially benefit automakers with operations in Canada, such as Stellantis and General Motors, as their vehicles would remain tariff-free and become more attractive to Canadian buyers.
The tariffs on electric vehicles will also impact American companies like Ford, General Motors, Lucid, Rivian, and Tesla, among others. Any EV imported from the U.S. will be subject to the 25% tariff. Tesla, which had been importing vehicles from Giga Shanghai into Canada, has had to switch to supplying U.S. made cars due to the tariff on Chinese electric vehicles. This change may lead to major price increases for Tesla's entire lineup in Canada, including the Model Y, Model 3, Model S, and Model X, with buyers potentially facing price increases of up to $9,000 on vehicles imported from the U.S.
The tariffs on electric vehicles are part of a second wave of tariffs on $125 billion worth of U.S. products. In response, the Canadian government has announced retaliatory tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods, including a 25% tariff on American-made electric vehicles.
The tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods will also take effect from Tuesday. Canada imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles, effective October 1, 2024.
The tariffs may make it harder for Canadian consumers to find affordable electric vehicle options. However, Canadian automakers may potentially benefit from the tariffs, as their vehicles in comparison to electric vehicles from the U.S. remain tariff-free, particularly in the context of the USMCA trade agreement, which provides exceptions for reciprocal additional tariffs on imports from Canada.
