U.S. President Trump threatens to impose additional economic sanctions against countries purchasing oil from Russia, possibly targeting China as well

In the global arena, nations are grappling with the impacts of tariff wars, and India is no exception. The latest development sees the US imposing a 25% tariff on India for importing Russian oil and gas, effective later this month.

India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has stated that India's imports are based on market factors and are aimed at ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India. This stance is evident in India's continued purchase of Russian oil, despite the US's threat of tariffs.

Russian crude constitutes a significant and strategically valuable part of India's oil imports, around 38-44% of its total crude intake. Replacing such large volumes would require diversifying suppliers across West Asia, West Africa, the US, and Latin America, increasing crude import costs by billions of dollars annually and affecting refining margins and product outputs significantly.

India has not received any formal directive to reduce Russian oil imports. Some public sector refiners have slowed purchases recently, partly to signal willingness to negotiate with the US. However, this reduction is also due to shrinking discounts on Russian crude rather than tariff pressures alone.

The US's tariffs on India are considered "extremely unfortunate" by India's Ministry of External Affairs, as several other countries are also taking similar actions in their national interest. The Chinese embassy in the US has stated that China is firmly opposed to illegal and unjustifiable unilateral sanctions and so-called long-arm jurisdiction by the US.

Meanwhile, China, the top purchaser of Russian energy, has continued its normal cooperation with Russia within the framework of international law. The Chinese embassy spokesperson has asserted that the cooperation between China and Russia is reasonable and lawful, without harm done to any third party.

The US's tariff move is part of President Trump's effort to cripple Russia's economy over its war in Ukraine. Trump has warned that more punishment is coming for countries buying Russian energy products. However, it is unclear whether Trump is working to negotiate a new trade deal with China or if he will apply new secondary sanctions on Beijing.

Tariff wars, according to the Chinese embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu, have no winners. The strategy marks an escalation in Trump's use of tariffs, his signature second-term weapon. As nations navigate complex economic costs, strategic considerations, and geopolitical pressures, it remains to be seen how the tariff wars will unfold and what impact they will have on global trade.
