Ukraine's Drone Attacks Cripple Russian Oil Refineries, Fueling War Crisis
Ukraine is escalating its strategy to disrupt Russia's oil industry, targeting refineries to hinder fuel supply to the military and limit war financing through oil exports. Recent drone attacks have led to significant shutdowns, with a major fire at the Yaroslavl refinery adding to the turmoil in Europe.
Ukraine has successfully shut down approximately a quarter of all Russian oil refineries, with around 70 percent of these closures attributed to drone attacks. The Yaroslavnefteorgsintes refinery, one of Russia's largest with a capacity of 15 million tons of crude oil per year, was recently engulfed in a major fire. Residents reported seeing strong flames and a large cloud of smoke billowing from the factory.
Robert Browdi, head of the Ukrainian drone troops, is believed to be responsible for these targeted attacks. The refinery shutdowns have reached a historic high, with 38 percent of Russian refineries offline by the end of September. If the Yaroslavl plant remains offline, it could exacerbate fuel shortages in Russia.
The fire at the Yaroslavl refinery, despite having purely technical causes, adds to the growing list of disruptions in Russia's oil industry. Ukraine's targeted drone attacks have significantly impacted Russia's refining capabilities, potentially hindering its military efforts and war financing in Europe.
