The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, a key player in the UK's business community, has taken a proactive step towards safeguarding its future by filing a notice of intent to appoint administrators. This decision comes as a result of sustained financial pressures, particularly in the venue and conference market, exacerbated by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic [1][2][3].

The chamber's Chamber Space project, introduced in 2017 with the ambition of becoming a major centre for business in Greater Manchester, has been affected by lasting changes in working patterns, a fall in demand, and rising operating costs. These challenges have made Chamber Space an unsustainable part of the business [1][2][4].

The chamber, which represents around 4,000 members and is the largest accredited member of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) network, emphasized that its priority remains its member community, staff, and the sustainability of the chamber's core work. Clive Memmott, the chamber's chief executive, stated that this move allows them to consider the best route forward for the core business, ensuring continuity of service for members and the wider business community [2].

The chamber's most recently published results show a loss of £641,000 while its revenue totalled £3.1m. Shortly before the pandemic, the chamber expanded the venue by opening a new conference suite in response to rising demand. However, the pandemic negatively affected the demand for the chamber's services and increased operating costs [5].

The chamber remains open and is prepared to address any questions that may arise from this announcement. It has stressed that this move is meant to protect the core functioning of the chamber and support its members while considering the best way forward for financial stability [2]. The organization is committed to facing this next step with integrity, care, and in the best interests of the business and those connected to it.
