Police Intervention and Train Disruptions Instigated by Unattended Backpack in Intercity Express, Reportedly Identified by BPOLI MD

Unattended backpacked on an Intercity Express train prompts law enforcement intervention and resulting service disruptions, as reported by a BPOLI MD source.

On September 5, 2025, an unattended piece of luggage was found in the toilet area of an Intercity-Express train on the route from Berlin to Frankfurt am Main. The luggage was later handed over to the lost and found office of the German Railway at Halle (Saale) Central Station.

The luggage belonged to a young passenger who had asked the train attendant for the toilet and was carrying the backpack in question. The passenger could not be found on the train, causing a minor commotion.

In response to the incident, a duty dog handler and his explosives detection dog were called to the scene. The dog did not show any behavior indicative of explosives, and the luggage was deemed safe and opened. The contents of the backpack were not visible.

The police found a phone number in the luggage, which led them to the legal guardian of a 16-year-old German. The Federal Police Inspection Magdeburg, which can be contacted for further questions regarding the incident, has since been in touch with the guardian.

Eleven trains were delayed by a total of 87 minutes due to this incident, as platforms 6/7 at Halle (Saale) Central Station were closed while the luggage was being investigated. The Federal Police reminded the public to keep an eye on their luggage and to keep it with them at all times, as such incidents can lead to police intervention with financial consequences and disrupt train schedules.

The incident serves as a reminder to always keep a close eye on personal belongings, especially in busy public spaces like train stations and trains.
