Updates on the Solar 1000 Megawatt and Solar 2000 Megawatt Projects in Algeria
The Algerian government has launched a tender for the "1000 MW Solar" project, as part of the country's ambitious goal to reach 15,000 MW of renewable electricity capacity by 2035. The tender process was initiated on 23 December 2021, with an initial submission deadline of 30 April 2022. However, due to unspecified reasons, the deadline was later extended to 15 June 2022.
Interested parties are required to form Project Companies (Special Purpose Vehicles or SPVs) for the financing, design, supply of equipment, construction, operation, and maintenance of the solar power plants. The SPVs will also be responsible for installing evacuation facilities and connecting the power plants to the national electricity grid.
The solar projects will span 11 provinces, primarily located in the southern region of Algeria. The construction of these projects is expected to commence in early 2024 at an estimated cost of 171.5 billion Algerian dinars.
The Algerian Renewable Energy Company (SHAEMS, Spa) will evaluate various technical and financial offers after the submission of the tenders before formulating the power purchase tariffs. The electricity generated by the "Solar 1000MW" Project will be sold to a designated buyer under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
As of August 2025, there is no publicly available information about the status or new submission deadline for the "Solar 1000MW" project tender. However, it is known that 111 investors from 15 countries have indicated interest to participate in the tender. The number of interested investors is expected to rise since the bidding deadline has been extended.
The tenders for the 1 GWp solar PV plant in Algeria were launched in December 2021, with the purpose of providing capacity on plots ranging from 50 MW to 300 MW. Developers are allowed to bid on one or more lots totaling 300 MW. The procurement campaign for the "Solar 1000MW" Project will contain local content requirements, but they will not be essential for the first contract in the series.
The Ministry of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies has launched a call for tenders for the implementation of the "Solar 1000MW" Project in Algeria. The project will be constructed in batches of 50 to 300 MWp on a total area of 4,250 hectares of land.
For the latest tender details and updates, it is recommended to check official Algerian energy ministry announcements or procurement portals.
