US-Russia Trade Deficit Widens as India Balances US, Russian Ties
The United States' trade relations with Russia and India have seen significant shifts in 2025. Between January and June, the US imported $2.5 billion worth of strategic raw materials from Russia, but exports only amounted to $284.3 million, resulting in a $2.21 billion trade deficit. Meanwhile, India maintains a goods trade surplus of $44.76 billion with the US, despite US criticism of its continued purchase of Russian oil.
The US trade deficit with Russia is largely due to sanctions and trade restrictions imposed under the Trump administration. These measures, including increased tariffs and import bans on Russian products, have disrupted US supply chains. The US imports from Russia include critical materials such as radioactive chemicals, nitrogenous fertilizers, platinum, and uranium. However, these imports have not been reciprocated, leading to a significant deficit.
India, on the other hand, has seen its trade with the US grow to $131.84 billion in 2025, with a surplus of $44.76 billion. Despite US criticism of India's purchase of Russian oil, India's trade with Russia in FY25 includes $63.84 billion in imports, mostly crude oil, and $4.88 billion in exports. The US has responded by imposing tariffs on Indian goods and increasing H-1B visa fees, threatening India's services export industry.
The US-Russia trade imbalance highlights the impact of US sanctions on bilateral trade. Meanwhile, India's robust trade with both the US and Russia reflects its strategic balancing act. As trade tensions persist, both countries must navigate these complex economic relations to maintain stability and growth.
